Drinkware is a prop in food photography that accentuates your desserts. There are many types of drinkware, but not all are created equal. When selecting these props, you must consider the thickness of the glass, size, and placement.

GLASS THICKNESS

I prefer to use thin glassware because when you use thick glass, you can't see through the glass, and it doesn't photograph as nicely, especially if you are photographing shooters, cake jars, or parfaits.

The thickness of the glass may not make much of a difference if you are adding a glass of milk to your photo. The thickness of the glass may not make much of a difference if you are adding a glass of milk to your photo.

Size Matters

Be mindful of the size of your dessert vs. the drinkware. For example, when photographing cupcakes, I would suggest using a small mug or stemless wine glass in the background. Cupcakes are not a tall dessert, and if you use a tall glass or mug it will be difficult to capture the drinkware in your photo because the drinkware would be much taller than the cupcake.

Take a look at this image. The drinkware and props are small, like the dessert being displayed.

Placement

Lastly, consider the placement of the drinkware in the scene. Depending on where you place the drinkware, how far or how close it is to your dessert it can appear much smaller or larger than normal.

To accentuate your dessert with drinkware props, consider the glass thickness, the size, vs. the dessert size, and the drinkware placement.
